Imagine my delight when I opened the program and saw "Candide Overture (1956), Bernstein".
Any bando who's been playing for over 4 years would recognize that tune (alongside "Coral and Shaker Dance"). It's pretty much a classic in the standard windband repertoire-- plus it is a damn good piece of music. I'm a little embarrassed to admit it sits atop my iTunes "Most Played" list. Hearing it live again was like visiting an old friend. I closed my eyes and heard echoes of bands past: OMEA state, Bartlesville High, UIUC summer.
Dead fish out of the lake, 'fire' in the bandroom, re-painting grey stands.
Lots and lots of laughter. I didn't know we were all so bizarre until I left and entered the real world. I guess when everyone is peculiar you're all normal.
Tonight, sitting among strangers, I realized I still knew every phrase. And even after all these years I still wait with excitement for the soaring horn riff at 2:48.
Makes me smile every time.
