What's said: "[My baby girl] will be a princess!!"
What I hear: We'll encourage her to be meek and pampered, glorifying beauty and submissiveness. She'll spend most of her young adult life waiting for a nonexistent Prince Charming to come rescue her.
What's said: "I got ahold of that Latisse stuff. Sooooo many people compliment me on my eyelashes now!"
What I hear: I'm willing to submit my body to uncomfortable, unnecessary drugs in order to obtain an unrealistic version of the female body. I can never be young or pretty enough-- the only way to get close is to continuously hide or alter my natural features!
What's said: "My daughter just started college. She gets asked out EVERY night!"
What I hear: It's most important that you know how attractive the boys find my child, since that directly determines her worth. Who cares about schoolwork or sports when sex appeal is the ultimate goal for every American woman.
Ugh.
Sometimes I think there's seriously something wrong with my thought process. How did I become so damn cynical?
I guess if I didn't start out, from Day 1, with a disfigured face maybe I would value beauty more.
My priorities obviously lie elsewhere.

I can't tell you how to live your life, but I'm at peace with mine.
I think you should read some Judith Butler.
